What's the Difference Between a Big Camp and a Small Gym in Phuket?

This is one of the first decisions every traveler faces once they realize how many training options exist around Chalong’s Fitness Street, and it comes down to a tradeoff between scale and personal attention.

Big international camps run dozens of classes a week across multiple rings or training areas, with on-site accommodation, restaurants, and sometimes their own retail shops. They attract a constant rotation of travelers from every fitness background, from total beginners to UFC-level athletes training camps. The benefit is variety, structure, and a social atmosphere that makes solo travel feel less isolating — you’ll always find someone to train or grab a meal with. The downside is class size: with 20 or more people per session, you’ll get less individual technique correction, and the experience can feel more like a fitness factory than personalized coaching.

Smaller, traditional Thai-owned gyms operate differently. Classes are tighter, often run by a former professional fighter who knows every student by name within a few sessions. You’ll get more rounds on the pads, more hands-on correction, and a slower, more relationship-driven experience. The tradeoff is fewer class times per day, a smaller social scene, and sometimes less English spoken, though this varies widely by gym.

Neither type is objectively better — it depends on what you’re optimizing for. If you’re newer to combat sports or traveling solo and want structure plus community, a big camp removes a lot of friction. If you’ve trained before and want to sharpen technique with serious one-on-one attention, a smaller gym will get you there faster. Some experienced travelers actually split their trip between both: a big camp for the first stretch to acclimate, then a smaller gym once they know what they want out of their training.
