Do I Need a Visa to Train in Phuket?

For most nationalities, no — not for a standard training trip under two months.

For most nationalities, no — not for a standard training trip under two months. Citizens of the US, UK, most of the EU, Australia, Canada, and dozens of other countries can enter Thailand visa-free under the visa exemption program and receive an entry stamp good for up to 60 days. That single stamp covers the vast majority of training trips, whether you’re doing a short Muay Thai block, a HYROX prep camp, or a strength and conditioning reset.

Where it gets more specific is if you’re planning to stay longer than 60 days, train at a level that looks like work (competing for prize money, coaching others for pay), or want the flexibility to come and go over several months. In those cases, a Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) or a longer-stay tourist visa applied for in advance may make more sense than relying on extensions and border runs. Some Muay Thai camps in Phuket specifically help foreign fighters get documentation for extended stays because they’ve seen so many guests want to stay longer than they originally planned.

The most common mistake is assuming “training” and “working” are the same thing in the eyes of Thai immigration — they’re not. Paying to train as a guest at a gym is completely different from being paid to fight, coach, or run camps yourself, and the visa requirements differ accordingly. If your trip is purely about your own training and conditioning, the visa-exemption stamp (and possibly one extension) will almost certainly be enough.

Always check current requirements close to your travel dates, since visa-exemption rules and stay lengths have changed multiple times in recent years and can vary by passport.
