How Long Can I Stay in Thailand to Train?
If you're planning a training trip to Phuket, the length of your stay is usually capped by your visa, not your motivation.
If you’re planning a training trip to Phuket, the length of your stay is usually capped by your visa, not your motivation. Most Western passport holders (US, UK, EU, Australia, Canada) get a 60-day visa exemption on arrival as of recent policy changes, which is double what it used to be. That’s enough time for a real training block — long enough to adapt to the heat, build a relationship with coaches, and actually see technical and conditioning improvements instead of just sampling classes.
If 60 days isn’t enough, you have options. You can extend at a local Thai immigration office for an additional 30 days, which is a same-day process if you bring the right paperwork and a passport photo. Beyond that, many long-stay trainers do a “border run” — a short trip to a neighboring country like Malaysia — to reset the clock with a fresh entry stamp. Others apply for a longer-stay visa before they even land, especially if they know they’re committing to two or three months.
The trap most people fall into is booking a trip that’s too short to be worth the travel. A 4-5 day stop barely gets you through the jet lag and heat adjustment before you’re packing to leave. If you’re serious about combat sports, HYROX prep, or erg work, 2-4 weeks is the realistic minimum to walk away with something durable — better movement patterns, a noticeably bigger aerobic engine, or a faster erg time. Anything longer than that and you start getting into genuine transformation territory, which is why so many fighters and HYROX athletes treat a Phuket trip as a full training camp rather than a vacation with workouts attached.
Before you book, it’s worth mapping your trip length against your actual goal — weight loss, skill acquisition, race prep, or competition-specific gains all need different time horizons, and the visa rules shouldn’t be the thing deciding your training plan.
